The lifting of UK flight restrictions to Sharm el Sheikh has prompted a call for tourists and dive operators to help protect reefs in the Red Sea.

Holidaymakers returning to the Egyptian resort are being urged by a marine conservation charity to remember actions they can take to protect the country’s precious coral reefs.

Reef-World Foundation, which co-ordinates the UN environmental programme’s Green Fins conservation initiative, and the Chamber of Diving & Watersports (CDWS) highlighted the issue ahead of an expected fresh influx of travellers.

Green Fins was piloted in South Sinai region in September and will be expanded to be available to all dive and snorkel operators across the country by March 2020.

CDWS is rallying more Egyptian dive centres to join the Green Fins scheme to help improve their sustainability and prove they are following environmental best practice as a way of attracting eco-minded tourists.
