It is difficult to compare the island of Santorini with anywhere else, it is unique. 4000 years ago the island literally exploded as a volcano suddenly erupted, the ensuing tsunami is said to have destroyed the Minoan Civilisation in Crete 100 miles away. The side of the volcano's caldera collapsed and the sea rushed in. So today half of the caldera remains in a semi circle overlooking the sea at heights of 500 feet. The towns of Oia, Imerovigli and Thira are perched on the side of the caldera affording the most amazing views. Now santorini is more famous for the views, spectaculr sunsets and the blue-domed churches and the ancients winding streets and paths made of stone passing the numerous domed churches and the traditional white houses with blue windows. Fira is the main town and the capital of Santorini. It is situated at the west side of the island, approximately 10 km from the airport.
