CRETE.
Largest of the Greek islands, 160 miles long and up
to 38 miles wide, Crete was the cradle
of early Mediterranean civilisation and is now an island
of unique fascination. The land is infinitely varied
- mountain ranges rise up to 8,000 feet, Europe's deepest
gorge winds for twelve miles through rock walls at
times 1,000 feet high, and countless beaches lead to
a clear blue sea. No other Greek island has such a
unique combination of spectacular and varied landscapes,
a distinctive character of the islanders and impressive
archaeological remains, which date from different periods
of Crete’s history: Minoan palaces, Byzantine
churches, Venetian castles and Turkish minarets.
The
White mountains in the west and the Sitia
Mountains in the east descend to cultivated
plains and sleepy villages and then down
to a coastline of small fishing villages
and sandy beaches. It would be difficult
to ignore the opportunities to discover
at least some of Crete’s unique treasures
and hiring a car is therefore important,
whether to visit the Minoan palace at Knossos,
the fascinating old towns of Chania, Rethymnon,
and Agios Nikolaos, the dramatic Gorge
of Samaria, the small villages beneath
snow-capped mountains or just to find one’s
own little beach. Quite unlike any other
island Crete is for travellers as well
as for tourists and is an unmissable experience.
